DESCRIPTION:On behalf of all BIOPARC Valencia staff you are welcomed to the beautiful city of Valencia and the Palacio de Congresos de València\, the venue for the EAZA Annual Conference 2019. \nValencia is situated on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula\, fronting the Gulf of Valencia on the Mediterranean Sea. It is the third largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona\, with around 800\,000 inhabitants in the administrative centre\, and 1.7 to 2.5 million in the metropolitan area. The city was founded as a Roman colony in 138 BC. Its historic centre is one of the largest in Spain. Its heritage of ancient monuments\, views and cultural attractions makes Valencia one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. Valencia boasts a wide-ranging environmental offer due to its proximity to the Albufera Nature Reserve and the green lung\, located in the old Turia riverbed which crosses the city centre from east to west. \nBIOPARC Valencia is located in the Cabecera Park\, a 200\,000 m2 section of the extensive Turia Gardens. The Turia Gardens\, more than 11 km in length\, were created when the Turia River was re-channelled safely out of the city\, and it was decided to make the old riverbed a place for the people\, offering diverse possibilities for recreation. BIOPARC Valencia is a unique zoo. Its design employs the “zooimmersion” concept\, in which visitors are surrounded by meticulous recreations of the natural habitats being presented. Social animals that live together in groups are displayed\, as well as groups of different species that coexist in the same habitats. Predatory species are integrated into the visual space\, but are separated from other species by barriers invisible to the eye of the visitor\, ensuring the safety of both the animals and the people. The animals\, vegetation and landscape provide opportunities for discovering the complexity of natural ecosystems. \nBIOPARC Valencia is committed to education and conservation of animals and their ecosystems. It participates in many breeding programmes for species in danger of extinction.
